Wholly Heart was a professional development day for students and staff alike at Holy Heart high school in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador in 2015. Focusing on creating awareness around mental health, Wholly Heart combined contact-based education to reduce the stigma that surrounds mental health, while also educating students on various ways of promoting positive mental health.
The highlight of Wholly Heart was most certainly when Kathleen Edwards (Arctic 2014) delivered her keynote presentation to the students at Holy Heart. Kathleen’s genuine nature, humour, and musical abilities allowed all 600 people in the room to connect to every word that she spoke. Through sharing her own experiences will mental health, Kathleen’s remarkable story of recovery and positivity brought the audience to their feet.
Kathleen’s presence at Wholly Heart was a key moment for mental health efforts in NL– it brought youth into the conversation. Young people saw this charismatic individual talking about mental health and realized that they could too.
The Inspiration Grant from Students On Ice made this beautiful moment of connection and humility possible. By taking care of the travel from Kathleen’s home in near Ottawa to St. John’s, hundreds of young people were able to take part in a remarkable event that completely lifted the stigma and created a more inclusive space at Holy Heart, ultimately contributing to positive change for mental health in Newfoundland and Labrador.
