Mariah Janvier

Hi, My name is Mariah Janvier, I am 16 years old. I was born in Cold Lake, Alberta on August 9, 1997 and live on Cold Lake First Nations. I come from a large family; I have 3 sisters and 1 brother. My parents are not together anymore; I live with my mother and see my father often. I am Dene, Cree, and Ukrainian. My father is full blood, and my mother is Métis. My family is really close and supportive of my decisions. When I was younger had good grades and I got a lot of academic awards. When I got to grade 9 my grades went low because of my poor attendance. My sister taught me that skipping and bad grades are not worth it and will keep you in school longer. In grade 10 there was a year end trip to Greece, Turkey, and Istanbul. In order to go I had to keep good grades, attendance, and attitude. I was able to meet the criteria and was fortunate enough to travel to Greece. It was an amazing trip, I learned so much. I am a volunteer in my school and community. Cold Lake Outreach School believes in giving back to the community and actively seeks for students and staff to pay it forward. Activities include shore line clean-up, setting up areas for non-profit organizations, packing Christmas hampers, walking dogs and I am always willing to help. I assist in my community by helping serve the elders at dinners, and I volunteer at the daycare. I am looking forward to my grade 12 year so I can volunteer at the Seniors Lodge as I enjoy helping out the elderly, and they seem to enjoy me as well. I love music and often find myself singing without realizing it. In my spare time I enjoy reading books and writing in my journal or just short stories. In the summer I love to swim, I live by the lake so I usually go tanning until its too hot then I jump in the lake. This year I have just been working and going to school, I am very happy to have worked hard for the expedition and to get accepted. I look forward to all the work we will be doing and hope this will open my eyes to the environmental fields. I enjoy travelling and will work hard and stay focused to meet the criteria for this expedition.
