I am 17, live in the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland and am just finishing school where my main subjects have been science and geography. I am spending the next year working and travelling before studying marine science and Arctic studies at university. My long term plan is a career in sustainable environmental management. My main leisure interests are mountain walking, hill running, ski-ing snowboarding and competitive orienteering. I also play the bagpipes. For the last 3 years I have been a Young Leader with the local Cub Scout group and I am an Explorer Scout. I wanted to join the SOI expedition to see for myself the challenges the people and the environment of the Arctic face due to climate change and development pressures. I want to see what practical steps can be taken to achieve a sustainable future. There are few opportunities like this around for young people.
