SOI Arctic 2015 day 2: Exploring Ottawa!

Expedition update!

The majority of students had their first full day in Ottawa! Jam-packed with activities ranging from a scavenger-hunt on Parliament Hill, to zipping through the ropes course at Camp Fortune!

The day began with an introduction to the education program, and students broke up into pods and began to rotate between different “education stations,” led by different pairings of our team of polar experts, who spoke on topics that included people, arts and culture; science and ecosystems; politics, business and development; history, exploration and adventure; and flora and fauna.

Then the students departed in busses for a variety of different day activities, including zip-lining at Camp Fortune, a Parliament Hill scavenger hunt on the grounds, a tour of the Canadian Museum of Nature collections facility in Gatineau, and a tour of Centre Block on Parliament Hill.

After dinner students enjoyed a presentation on the “arch of experience” by author, educator and explorer, James Raffan (JR), heard from the expedition councillors about mental health, and finally were briefed on how to use zodiacs.

Then it was lights out to prepare for their first day in Greenland!
