Life at Sea

Welcome aboard the MS Ocean Endeavour!

OE-Deck-Plan-750x638Overall length: 137 meters (450 feet)

The Ocean Endeavour is the perfect vessel for expedition cruising. Outfitted with twenty Zodiacs, advanced navigation equipment, multiple conference rooms, workshop spaces, a library and a top deck observation room, she is purpose-built for expedition experiences in remote environments. The Ocean Endeavour boasts a 1B ice class, enabling her to freely explore throughout the Arctic summer. Ocean Endeavour’s crew is experienced, and friendly. Her shallow draft and maneuverability allow her to access isolated fiords, bays and secluded communities. Launched in 1982, she has had numerous upgrades, most recently in 2010 and 2014. At 137 meters (450ft) in length, Ocean Endeavour has plenty of space for our education program to thrive. Enjoy multiple decks offering a variety of programming spaces and plentiful deck space for wildlife observation. The interior spaces allow for multiple seminars and events to occur simultaneously. The Hub, Science Lab, and Art Studio aboard Ocean Endeavour are fantastic spaces for presentations, workshops and dialogue. Community is at the heart of the SOI expedition experience.

Of course, strict operational procedures and safety precautions are adhered to at all times. All passengers will need to complete and sign a ship registration form and waiver before embarkation. This will be provided to you as part of your SOI Expedition Registration Forms.

Please leave all non-essential valuables at home. Students on Ice cannot be held responsible for the loss or theft of any jewelry, cash, cameras, etc.  When traveling abroad it is important to travel safely and wisely.  We recommend a money belt or pouch that you can hide inside your clothing, which will hold your important documents and some of your funds while you are in transit.  Your passports will be collected by SOI staff upon embarking the ship and will be returned upon disembarkation.

Waste Disposal

All garbage and sewage waste is stored on board until the ship reaches a port with suitable disposal facilities.  Together we will all ensure that there is no littering during shore excursions.

Safety at Sea

Safety at sea is a major objective aboard the Ocean Endeavour.  The ship contains the latest in fire fighting equipment and fully complies with the strict provisions of the 1974 International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and its 1981, 1983, and 1988 Amendments.  In addition, all officers are specially trained in emergency procedures; and regular drills are held to instruct the crew in their emergency duties.  For passengers, a lifeboat drill is held within 24-hours of embarkation on each voyage.  Attendance at this drill is mandatory.

Life Vests

Cabins are equipped with an emergency life preserver for each passenger.  Separate life vests, which are more comfortable and light-weight are provided for use in the Zodiacs on all landings and cruises. Life vests must be properly secured before you begin to descend the ship’s gangway.

Water and Water Conservation

Tap water on board is safe to drink. There may be times during the expedition when you will be asked to conserve water in order to extend our fresh water supply.  With everyone’s co-operation, no real hardship will be noticed.  In line with this, if you would like to retain your towel for another day, simply hang it up.  When you are ready for a clean towel, place it on the floor.  This is a signal to your cabin attendant.

Daily Program

Each morning, SOI staff will post the expedition plan for the day, time of excursions, lecture presentations, other activities and hours of meals. Please keep in mind that “Flexibility is the key” and each day our plan of events and their hours may be altered depending on weather, ice conditions or amazing wildlife encounters!

Open Bridge Policy

Participants may have the opportunity to visit the bridge during a scheduled tour. The captain and crew are generally pleased to answer all questions regarding operations of the ship.

Wildlife Sightings

All sightings will be announced over the ship’s P.A. system, and entered in the official expedition logbook. Please let the bridge know of any sightings so that other students and staff can be informed.
