  • WHALE OF AN EXPEDITION JUST THE START FOR STUDENT
    Neville Judd
    Vancouver Province – July 8th

If Alexandra Mackenzie fulfills her ambition to become a marine biologist she'll likely remember the date, June 2, 2004. That was the day she discovered a Quebec-based organization, Students on Ice, had accepted her application to join its whale research expedition this August. "I was so excited. I was almost in tears I was just so happy," recalls Mackenzie, the only B.C. student selected for the 10-day August expedition to the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Mackenzie graduated from Westview Secondary School in Maple Ridge and plans to go to Douglas College for two years, then transfer to UBC where she hopes to major in marine biology and zoology. Next month's experience, she says, will be invaluable. "It's something I've always wanted to do," says Mackenzie, who is also a volunteer at the Vancouver Aquarium. "It will be a lot of work but the experience will help me get a job in marine mammal research or marine biology."

While on board the 165-foot research vessel, Mackenzie will assist a team of educators, including whale expert Richard Sears, with research into the blue whale. That will include the dubious pleasure of collecting whale 'poop' as well as taking biopsies and observing their habits from a zodiac.

In the meantime, she must raise $5,100 to fund her trip. She's getting a hand from Revs Bowling Centre in Maple Ridge (22730 119th Ave.), which is hosting a fundraiser July 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 and all are welcome. Call Revs at 604 467-2626 for more information, or e-mail Mackenzie at
