The Call to Adventure

The Call to Adventure

The Call to Adventure is an initiative of Arctic 2017 alumnus Carl Bindman. The Call will be a weekly, hour long interview-based radio show airing on Montreal’s CJLO 1690 AM, and hosted by Bindman.

Inspired by the discussions onboard the expedition of what experiences of adventure mean to different people, The Call will interrogate real stories of adventure by running them through the “Hero’s Journey” narrative archetype. In doing so, the aim is unveiling how adventure happens, why adventures work, and what adventure does to the adventurer and their community.

Following in the broad understanding of adventure highlighted on Arctic 2017, and wanting to challenge the restrictive popular understanding of adventure as faraway and mountainous The Call will showcase adventure not just in the outdoors, but will also deconstruct creative adventure, artistic adventure, political adventure, internal adventure, and others.

It will also seek to deconstruct the adventurer, moving away from the “classic” stereotype of the individual challenging and conquering the world on their own terms, because in a true “Hero’s Journey” narrative, adventure must begin and conclude with the community.

The long-term objective of the show is to make adventure an accessible concept to listeners, and to show them how to find the adventure in their own lives and communities.
