SOI-IPY Expeditioners return to Ottawa!

SOI-IPY Arctic Youth Expedition 2009 participants returned to Ottawa last evening evening from their incredible journey to Nunavik, Northern Québec, and Baffin Island, Nunavut. Returning via Iqaluit, Nunavut, yesterday they toured of the Legislative Assembly with Nunavut’s Commissioner, the Honourable Ann Meekitjuk Hanson. Commissioner Hanson took the opportunity to congratulate everyone for a great trip and had a naming ceremony for Expedition Leader Geoff Green! His Inuktitut name is now “Pitseolak”.

In the afternoon, students visited the local museum and visitors center before heading to beautiful Sylvia Grinnell Park for a celebratory barbecue with friends and valued partners to mark the end of a very successful expedition! Climate Change Advocate Sheila Watt-Cloutier spoke to all expeditioners and encouraged them to continue the important work that they’ve started with Students on Ice.

Today, participants will start making their way home. Many of the students are happy to return to their communities, but sad that the expedition has come to an end. They will bring back with them experiences and memories that they will keep for the rest of their lives.

Students on Ice looks forward to supporting expedition participants as they return home, share their new perspectives and begin their work as Polar Ambassadors.
