SOI Arctic 2015 day 15: Final day and welcome home event!

Today we celebrated the conclusion of SOI’s 15th Anniversary Arctic Expedition at the Canadian Museum of Nature!

It was a wonderful celebration with nearly 300 guests including staff and students from the Arctic Expedition, family members, partners and friends. Guests enjoyed a photo and video journey through expedition highlights and listened to inspiring presentations from Canadian Museum of Nature President & CEO Meg Beckel, Mrs. Vicki Heyman, wife of U.S. Ambassador to Canada Bruce Heyman, Director of Northern Parks for Parks Canada Don Marrin, Canadian Museum of Nature scientist Paul Sokoloff, and Metis artist Jaime Koebel.

Canadian singer/songwriter Sarah Harmer performed two songs, one of which was written on expedition and matched the emotion in the room as expeditioners reflected on their journey.

The highlight of the event, however were the remarks by several of the students, who shared their experiences, what they learned and the impact the journey had on them and their future goals and ambitions.

This 15th Anniversary Arctic Expedition was an incredible success! We explored glaciers, observed polar bears, whales and even the magnificent thick-billed murres of Bylot Island. We visited communities and learned from the people who call the Arctic home. We connected as a group with nature, with each other, and with the challenges and opportunities that we face as global citizens from climate change to mental health. We created music, art, built traditional Inuit qajaqs (kayak), which we even paddled in the Northwest Passage, and we had lots and lots of unforgettable adventures!

Thank you to all the families, partners, supporters and members of the SOI team who have helped to make this expedition possible. We welcome 112 new members into the SOI alumni community and look forward to supporting their continued journey and success as young leaders.

In the expedition spirit,

Geoff Green
SOI Founder, President & Expedition Leader
