You should participate in the Canadian Youth Steering Committee Youth Photo Contest!
As part of their activities planned for the International Polar Year, the Canadian Youth Steering Committee is holding a photo contest for youth, aged 20 and younger. Enter photos of your favourite animal or area. Ask your friends and family to pose for you, or take pictures of your community. Photos will be judged in three categories:
1. Traditional Culture Today
2. Polar Wildlife & Landscape
3. The Changing Poles
First place winners in each category will receive $2500 in gift certificates towards new cameras and photography accessories, second place in each category will receive $1000 in camera equipment gift certificates, and third place in each category will receive $500 in camera equipment gift certificates. All submitted photos will be published and included in the CYSC time capsule to be stored in Yellowknife, NWT until the next International Polar Year, 50 years from now. 12 entry photos will be selected to produce a calendar to be sent to all entrants. Rules & Regulations
Subject: The photograph subject must fall within one of the following 3 categories: (1) Traditional Culture Today (2) Polar Wildlife & Landscape (3) The Changing Poles. The image must have been taken from a polar location (Arctic or Antarctic) by a Canadian resident. Photos from within Canada must have been taken north of the Line of Discontinuous Permafrost as defined by the Northern Scientific Training Program (www.ainc-inac.gc.ca/nstp/nstpmp_e.html). If you would like clarification on location and/or eligibility, please contact the CYSC at IPY.firstname.lastname@example.org.
Eligibility: The contest is open to Canadian residents 20 years of age or younger as of February 28, 2009.
Entries:Images can be submitted by post or electronically by e-mail. Prints should be between 3” x 5” and 8” x 10” in size. Electronic submissions should not exceed 4 megabytes in size. Entries may not be retouched or produced from modified film or composite images. All entries become the property of the Canadian IPY Secretariat and will not be returned. All submitted images will become part of the CYSC’s International Polar Year Time Capsule. Selected images will also be posted on the CYSC website. Current plans are to to produce a calendar using 12 image entries to be distributed to all entrants. Photographs should have been taken no more than 12 months prior to the contest closing date (February 28, 2009).
Deadline for Entry: Entries must be received by 4:00 p.m. Mountain Time on February 28, 2009.
Submissions:The name, address, telephone number, and date of birth of the photographer must accompany each entry. A brief description of the photograph, it’s location, and the category in which it is to be entered must also be attached. Contestants under the age of 18 must have their parent or guardian sign the attached release on their behalf. There is a limit of 1 entry per category per person. Additional entries will not be accepted. Entries may be delivered or mailed to the CYSC via the Canadian IPY Secretariat, ATTN: CYSC Polar Photo Contest, c/o Julia Christensen, Room 705, 805 Sherbrooke St. West, Department of Geography, McGill University, Montreal, QC, H3A 2K6 . Digital files submitted by post should be on CD-ROM. Entries can also be submitted via e-mail at IPY.email@example.com. If we receive your image(s) electronically, you must send a written copy of the completed entry form.
Notification: Winners will be notified by telephone and/or e-mail by March 31, 2009.
Judging: Entries will be judged on originality and overall photographic quality. The decision of the judges is final.
Rights: All entries will become the exclusive property of the CYSC and Canadian IPY Secretariat for promotional and advertising purposes without payment or notification. Entries will NOT be returned. Winners agree to the use of their name(s) and photograph, if required. Before receiving a prize, each entrant must confirm that the winning photograph was taken by him/herself and that he/she has no rights to the photograph, and that all rights to the photograph, including copyright and payment therefore are assigned exclusively to the CYSC and the Canadian IPY Secretariat.
Prizes: All prizes have been provided by the CYSC and the Canadian IPY Secretariat and must be accepted as awarded. Limit one prize per entrant.
