Paying the Expedition Fee: Self-financing, fundraising and scholarships
Applicants can fund their participation on a Students on Ice Expedition in many different ways. Some participants are able to fund their participation themselves. In the past many participants have been successful in running fundraising campaigns in their communities. If you are considering fundraising to pay the expedition fee, please see our Fundraising Toolkit for resources, tips and tricks, and success stories.

We understand that not everyone has the means, network and ability to fund or fundraise the expedition fee. To ensure participation in our expeditions is as accessible as possible, Students on Ice offers scholarships for high school students. Please see the Applications section of our site to learn more about the available scholarships and their specific eligibility criteria.

By applying for a scholarship with Students on Ice, you agree to share your contact information with SOI or a funding partner organization as you may be contacted by the funding partner in the event that you are awarded a scholarship

Health Statement

Students must be capable of moderate physical activity, such as hiking over uneven terrain. During days at sea, the possibility of rough sea conditions may lead to participants experiencing seasickness. Although we are visiting during the summer season, daily temperatures may be below freezing and all participants will be expected to participate in all daily excursions. These excursions, such as Zodiac boat cruises and shore landings, generally range from two to three hours in length.

I attest that I am in good health and capable of performing normal activities on this expedition. I further attest that I am capable of caring for myself during the expedition, and that I will not impede the progress of the expedition or the enjoyment of others aboard. I understand that this expedition will take me far from the nearest medical facility and that all expedition members must be self-sufficient. With that understanding, I certify that I have not been recently treated for, nor am I aware of any physical condition or disability that would create a hazard to myself or other members of the expedition.

More About You
Please respond to the following questions in english, either in written essay format or by uploading an audio recording, to help us get to know you a bit better.

More About You
Please write your response to each essay question in the appropriate box below. We recommend that you write your answers in a word document, then copy and paste each answer into the corresponding box. There is a 250 word limit for each answer.

Because you indicated that you want to apply for a scholarship, please respond to the following short essay question.

Scholarships are available to students (primarily high school) depending on eligibility criteria. After you submit your application with this short essay question completed, Students on Ice will enter you into scholarship pools that you are eligible for as those scholarships are confirmed. Some scholarships may have up to two supplementary essays question (max. 500 words) that is a mandatory part of the application. You will be notified and given the opportunity to complete these supplementary essay questions if necessary.

The Scholarship selection committee will be considering the following criteria when evaluating applications: Motivation to participate; desire to learn; leadership potential; community involvement; "Heart", as determined by passion and empathy; and vision and commitment towards creating change.

More About You
Create a separate audio file for each response saved as an m4a file or mp3 file and name it using the following format: lastname.firstname.Q1 (for scholarship responses use QSCH)
For each recording clearly read the question aloud and then continue with your response.

For your reference, 250 words is approximately 2 minutes. Please note that there is a 3 minute limit to responses.

Suggestions:
- Treat this like a job interview and practice with your community mentor, a friend or a teacher
- Write notes to refer to when responding
- Try timing yourself while you practice to stick to 2-3 minutes
- Create the recordings in a quiet space so that background noise does not interfere with your voice, and test your recorder on playback to make sure it is loud enough

Remember these answers will be compared to essays of about 250 words, so give us your best answers within the time limit!

How-to:
Most computers/phones have a sound recorder built in - you may require a microphone. Below is a common list of applications you might find useful.

Windows - search for Sound Recorder in your programs
Mac -  use the application Garage Band
iPod touch - Voice memo
Samsung phones - Voice Recorder app

If you and your school do not have the technology available and are interested in this option please contact the Students on Ice office at apply@studentsonice.com or
1-866-336-6423 and we will find an alternative solution.
