2018 Arctic Expedition
Welcome to the Students on Ice 2018 Arctic Expedition staff application form.

For every expedition we carefully build our expedition staff team in order to create the most powerful learning experience for our youth participants and overall team. Completing the Staff Member form will allow us to ensure that your expertise, experience and motivation aligns well with the SOI mandate and will contribute a needed dimension to the emerging 2018 Arctic Expedition team. In turn, this approach also supports maximum engagement and positive outcomes for selected staff’s expedition experience.

This year, we are excited to be running a new initiative— the Teachers on Ice Scholarship Program— onboard our summer expedition. This new initiative has been made possible by funding from the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)’s PromoScience program. All Canadian secondary science teachers are eligible to apply. If you are applying for this opportunity, please check the appropriate box below in the 'Application Stream' section and proceed with completing the form.

This form will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. You will also need some additional time to write your responses to the essay questions.

Please ensure that you save the form (using the tool at the top right corner of this page) in order to not lose your work. We also recommend that you write and edit your short essay responses in a word document before copying and pasting the responses into the text boxes in the form below.

If you have any questions about the application form, please contact:

2018 Arctic Expedition Applications

The 2018 Teachers on Ice Program

Thank you for your interest in participating in the new Teachers on Ice Scholarship Program with the Students on Ice Foundation.

The goal of the Teachers on Ice Scholarship Program is to recognize science educators in Canada who: (a) share the Students on Ice mission of inspiring, engaging and educating youth; (b) demonstrate a holistic approach to teaching and learning in their current science classroom(s); and (c) empower students to be active and positive agents of change in their home communities and beyond. Selected teachers will be provided a professional development opportunity that offers a new level of scientific awareness through an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural and experiential context situated in the Canadian and Greenlandic North. In turn, such an opportunity impacts not only participating teachers’ professional growth, but also that of their current and future students, colleagues and the broader personal and professional communities in which they are part.

This opportunity covers the expedition fee of $12,900 CAD. The expedition fee includes all general expenses (accommodations, travel, meals, and programming) during the expedition starting from your arrival in Ottawa.

Scholarship recipients will be responsible for travel arrangements and costs to and from the gateway city of Ottawa. Scholarship recipients are also responsible for personal travel insurance and medical insurance (which is mandatory for participation).

Teachers on Ice scholarship recipients will engage in all programming aspects of the expedition and will serve as expedition staff members with assigned student support responsibilities, along with other optional program responsibilities. Once accepted, all of these additional options will be shared as part of registration.

Applications must be received by April 24th, 2018 by 11:59pm EST. Applications received after the deadline will not be accepted. Note that you can save your application and return to it any time prior to the deadline.

All applicants will be notified in May of the selection panel’s decision. A formal announcement of the 2018 Teachers on Ice scholarship recipients will be released on the Students on Ice Foundation website in June 2018.

Important considerations before you apply
Each staff member in a Students on Ice Expedition carries a significant responsibility for the overall quality of the learning environment and the success of the expedition. Before completing this application, please consider the following:
  1. A Students on Ice Expedition is an educational expedition and as such it has a different character than a vacation experience. As a staff member, you must be committed to participate fully in all aspects of the program and assist when needed.
  2. To be successful as a staff member and to be able to make the most of your participation, you need to be passionate about the goals of the SOI program, enjoy working with youth and have an interest in the Polar Regions. Specific expertise relevant to the Polar Regions or formal training as an educator is desirable, but not required to participate as a member of the expedition staff team.
  3. In selecting our expedition staff we look for individuals with the following qualities:
    • dynamic, enthusiastic, engaging, passionate about learning and comfortable interacting with a large and diverse group of youth; and
    • providing guidance and leadership to youth who are far from home in a foreign environment and support SOI core staff and the education program.
  4. The expedition fee for staff members in 2018 will be $12,900 CAD + 2.5% GST or $10,750 USD + 2.5% GST. The fee is equivalent to the expedition fee for student participants. Students on Ice is a not-for-profit organization and we keep the expedition fee for youth participants as low as possible. Experience shows that staff members gain as much as youth participants from their participation, if not more!
  5. Successful staff applicants will be required to submit a clear Police Records Check, including clearance for service with the Vulnerable Sector, from their local police authority.
  6. Successful applicants must also possess a passport or be able to successfully complete the process of obtaining a passport at least one month before the start of the expedition.

  4. agree to a two-year leadership commitment with the Students on Ice Foundation’s education team. During this time, teachers will be asked to complete several deliverables related to their Teachers on Ice experience including: (a) delivering one professional development workshop for other educators based on their expedition experience; (b) at least one blog post to be posted on the SOI website; and (c) at least one lesson plan/learning module to be implemented with your science students that incorporates learning and critical insights gained from the expedition experience.

  1. a demonstrated understanding of science literacy and ability to teach about critical and complex issues current in the world; and

Health Statement

The expedition program contains many activities that can be physically demanding, such as hiking. During days at sea, the possibility of rough sea conditions may lead to participants experiencing seasickness. Although we are visiting during the summer season, daily temperatures may be below freezing and staff will be expected to participate in all daily excursions. These excursions, such as Zodiac boat cruises and shore landings, generally range from two to three hours in length.

I attest that I am in good health and capable of performing normal activities on this expedition. I further attest that I am capable of caring for myself during the expedition, and that I will not impede the progress of the expedition or the enjoyment of others aboard. I understand that this expedition will take me far from the nearest medical facility and that all expedition members must be self-sufficient. With that understanding, I certify that I have not been recently treated for, nor am I aware of any physical condition or disability that would create a hazard to myself or other members of the expedition.

General Medical Information
We are travelling to a remote place and we and our doctors must be aware of any and all medical concerns and needs in order to be prepared for medical emergencies. Please outline any medical conditions, illnesses, and/or disabilities that require or have required the regular care of a doctor in the section below. It is VERY important that you provide as much information as possible.  This information will only be shared with our doctors and will otherwise be kept confidential.
