It is mandatory to have emergency evacuation and medical insurance to travel with Students on Ice. We recommend obtaining a basic minimum coverage of $150,000 CAD. Please note that this is a suggested minimum and that actual medical and evacuation costs may far exceed this amount. The cost of purchasing insurance is not included in your expedition fee. Insurance policies must cover the entire expedition period (July 23 to August 7, 2018), plus any additional travel days required outside of this period. Persons that already have their own medical and emergency evacuation coverage will be asked to provide proof of insurance as part of the SOI registration form.
If you are not currently covered under an existing insurance plan you will need to buy medial insurance. Ingle Insurance offers insurance packages that have been specifically tailored for SOI participants and staff.
FAQ: How do I know if my existing coverage under my/my parents policy meets the SOI requirements?
A: The minimum coverage required is $100,000 CAD for medical emergencies and $50,000 CAD for emergency medical evacuation, which must include “air ambulance.” Some policies may have these amounts as part of the overall limit for emergency medical care. In those situations, minimum coverage for emergency medical care should be $150,000 CAD and must include a provision for emergency air ambulance evacuation. Additionally, your policy should cover activities such as hiking, swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, and kayaking. This kind of travel and medical insurance may already be a part of your existing coverage.
