“There’s really so much more life in the arctic than people think,” she said by satellite phone from the ship on Wednesday. She’s been surprised by the diversity of wildlife and plants on land and sea, and enjoying the rich cultural traditions of communities.

Two other Indigenous youth initiatives were also announced at Monday’s event. Ten Mi’kmaq youth will join 130 students and mentors in the largest ever Students on Ice Arctic Expedition. Starting Tuesday they’ll head off on a two-week journey throughout northern Inuit communities aboard the MS Ocean Endeavour while learning about environmental stewardship and acquiring leadership skills.

Neylan Stevens, an Eskasoni high school student, will be among the crew. She said she’s excited about the adventure, especially the prospect of learning more about Inuit cultures.

“It’s important for me that our own culture and language is preserved because it’s kind of dying off,” said Stevens.

Students On Ice : une expérience unique

Le projet international intitulé, « Students on Ice », co-organisé par la Direction de l’Éducation Nationale de la Jeunesse et des Sports et la Fondation Prince Albert II, permet chaque année à de jeunes étudiants de participer à un séjour de sensibilisation dans les régions polaires. L’été dernier 125 élèves du monde entier parmi lesquels deux lycéens de la Principauté ont participé à cette aventure unique. Cette année, plus de cent étudiants de lycées et d’universités du monde entier vont participer à la prochaine expédition en Arctique qui aura lieu du 23 juillet au 7 août 2019.
