THE STUDENT'S ANTARCTIC JOURNEY

EXPEDITION JOURNALS

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 28th
Posted: 2:30 pm ET

It is now 11:30am on the 28th and we are sailing along across the Drake Passage. The seas are not bad but it is still the Drake so some of the students are experiencing the effects. Yesterday we were unable to send out the updates and photos because we were blocked by glaciers and mountains until late in the afternoon. It is hard to believe that we are now leaving Antarctica. The expedition has gone by so quickly. Our final day was a great one.

But first let me back up to the evening of the 26th, where high winds caused us to seek shelter in the protection of Leith Cove. It was the prefect spot, totally calm and peaceful, with glacial walls all around us. Despite the strong winds outside, we all slept like babies in our bunks. The next day we awoke to a surreal world. Snow had fallen all night covering the decks of the Polar Star, and a thin layer of new ice had formed on the sea's surface. In every direction were different colours of blues in the glaciers and icebergs, and there was an intense feeling of tranquility in the air. An atmosphere surrounded us which touched you to the core and some may say even to your soul.

We raised the anchor and sailed towards Danco Island in the Errera Channel to make our first landing of the day.

To be continued... Geoff
