JOURNALS for Saturday (posted Sunday 6:30 pm

Vic, Chaperone
Greetings to Kathy, my family and Ben at the Wellington Times newspaper from Vic in Buenos Aires, Argentina. We are enjoying two days of touring and rest in this beautiful city prior to our departure to the tip of South America and boarding our expedition ship that will take us to the end of the world - Antarctica! What a fantastic trip so far! Today I watched the snow-tipped Andes Mountains pass beneath us as we flew over them on our way from Santiago, Chile, to Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Tomorrow we are on our way to an Argentinian ranch for an outing and a cultural activities display. The education team was introduced to us today! What a fantastic team of experts on wildlife, glaciers, oceanography, and the environment! Among our education team is Bill Lishman , the Father Goose of "Fly Away Home," an autobiographical film that had portions of its filming done at Sandbanks Provincial Park in our own Prince Edward County. On staff as well is Jen, a cousin of Kevin Gale, a local county councillor back home. Small world, eh?

Laquale, Student Expeditioner

Hi to everyone,
We are at a restaurant, and we love it so much we gave an American tip, and they were pleased with it very much. Life is adventure waiting to happen. Thank you fans.

Michael J. Manyak, MD

Tell everyone that we all arrived safely and without medical mishap. Everyone is in great spirits (judging by the friendly camaraderie) and we are very pleased with the diversity and attitudes of the students and chaperones. To further reassure you from a medical perspective, we have 2 other physicians on board, one of whom is a specialist in pediatric emergency medicine. The other is a specialist in internal medicine so, with my surgical and expedition medicine background, we are about as well prepared for any medical contingency as we can be on such an excursion. Furthermore, the ship is well equipped for medical problems. Therefore, I want all of you to enjoy the reports on the website knowing that health care and safety are well tended and that Geoff Green and his staff are well organized.

Best regards to all of you

The City of Buenos Aires is the capital of the Argentine Republic.

It is located in the southern hemisphere of the American continent, latitude 34º 36’ and longitude 58º 26’ . When coming by plane, the travel takes about ten hours from New York, London, Paris, Madrid and Rome. The city extends on a plain covering 19.4 kilometers (12 miles) from north to south and 17.9 kilometers (11 miles) from east to west. Approximately three million people live in its 202 square kilometers (78.3 sq miles). However, together with the metropolitan area, the total population of Buenos Aires is above ten millions, making it one of the ten most populated urban centers in the world.

Places we may visit:

THE OBELISCO, WHOLE LOCAL SYMBOL

The Obelisco, symbol of Bs.As, was built to celebrate the 4th century of Buenos Aires first foundation by Pedro de Mendoza on the 2nd June 1536

This monument, set up on the 23 may 1936 is situated where the San Nicolas de Bari's church used to be, place where the argentinian flag was first hoisted on the 23th august 1812.

Designed by Alberto Prebisch, the obelisco is 67.5 metres of height. Its base of 49 square metres, has a door that allows you to get into it. Inside, there is a stair and climbing its 206 steps you can reach the top from where the city can be appreciated through any of its four windows.

For its construction 680 cubic metres of concrete and 1360 square metres of white stone brought from Córdoba were needed. On the 1938 and after some detachments, its stone covering was finally put off and replaced by a concrete one.

It is situated on the crossroad of 9 de Julio and Corrientes avenues.

CASA ROSADA

The official home in Buenos Aires of the president of the Republic Argentina, this building stands since 1580, year in wich it was designed by Don Juan de Garay.

Many remodelations have been made to the original version.

The building that we can appreciate nowadays is the result of the union of two twin constructions.

Its caracteristic colour (that gives it its name) was chosen by Domingo Faustino Sarmiento in 1873 and never changed.

Inside the Pinkish House, there is a museum with belongings of all Argentina's presidents.
