ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION VESSEL - "The Akademik Shokalskiy"

Akademik Shokalskiy is a terrific expedition ship. Built in Finland in 1983, she is ice-strengthened and has stabilizers for more comfortable travel and is able to navigate scenic areas where many other vessels cannot. In 1998 she was refurbished to provide comfortable accommodation for 53 passengers, an ideal number for expedition cruising.

On board are a lounge and a dedicated lecture room/library (stocked with a good collection of reference books and videos). All cabins have outside portholes, plus ample storage space. The spacious bridge (always open to us) and the decks are ideal for viewing. Specifications:

  • Length: 71.6 meters
  • Beam: 12.8 meters
  • Draft: 4.5 meters
  • Cruising speed: 0 - 11 knots
  • Displacement: 2140 tons
  • Registry: Russian

On all Students on Ice expeditions we have our own doctor, a nurse and a hospital on board the ship, available 24 hours each day during the expedition. In the case of any emergency, a Medical Emergency Contingency Plan is in place.

The safety and well being of each participating student is the number one priority during the expedition. Our extremely experienced expedition team are with the students at all times. The student-staff ratio is an exceptional three to one.

We also employ a fleet of Zodiacs (inflatable boats). During our daily shore excursions in the Arctic and the Antarctic, we utilize the Zodiac boats, the safest and most practical boats of their kind in the world, designed by Jacques Cousteau.

“Coming on this trip has exposed me to so many things. It's hard to explain in words because no "adjective" can express the impact that Antarctica has done to my life. Just being recommended for this trip was an honor and now being able to feel, breathe, see, and touch it, is unbelievable. I have see nature at its best and felt that emptiness I was looking for. Being able to sit on top of a mountain and listening and seeing the icebergs, I know that I will take this amazing journey and keep it in my mind and heart forever. I have grown…”
