This year Students on Ice is bringing together alumni from the circumpolar Arctic and around the world to join our SOI delegation at the Arctic Circle Assembly held in Reykjavík, Iceland. We will learn together, build personal and professional capacity, and engage in circumpolar development.
The Arctic Circle Assembly is an annual international gathering that brings together heads of states and governments, Ministers, Members of Parliaments, officials, experts, scientists, entrepreneurs, business leaders, Indigenous representatives, environmentalists, students, activists and others from the growing community of individuals interested in the future of the Arctic.
In collaboration with organizations, think tanks, universities, corporations, research institutions, governmental bodies and public associations from around the world, the SOI Alumni Delegation to Arctic Circle will explore topics ranging from clean energy to tourism to the rights and roles of Indigenous peoples and so much more.
The Students on Ice Alumni Program has been supporting alumni of all ages from around the world for over 18 years. In recent years increasing effort has been made to foster an alumni network that is engaged, active and change-making. We push alumni to learn at the edge of what they know and we support an extended learning and capacity building journey beyond expedition. Building on past experiences with delegations to IUCN World Conservation Conference (2016, Hawaii, USA), the International Marine Protected Areas Congress (2017, La Serena, Chile), and Canadian Roots Exchange National Youth Reconciliation Conference (2018, Sudbury, Canada), this delegation will further develop the role of alumni in networking, presentations, and community engagement. This delegation raises the profile of SOI as an organization dedicated to youth engagement and leadership opportunities in the Arctic.
In addition to engaging with the circumpolar community on Ocean Health and increasing understanding of the Canadian Arctic, the SOI Alumni Delegation to Arctic Circle aims to offer alumni participation with the following objectives:
– personal and professional development opportunities;
– opportunities to engage in circumpolar development;
– opportunities to reconnect face-to-face with the SOI alumni community;
– opportunities to learn and grow in a cross cultural and intergenerational space; and
– opportunities to meet a larger professional network.
These opportunities support delegation members in becoming strong leaders in their communities as well as internationally engaged global citizens. The youth of today are change-makers and this delegation will provide a personal and professional development opportunity like no other to engaged and passionate young leaders.
