Support the Foundation

The Students on Ice (SOI) Foundation relies on funding and donations from a large variety of sources to conduct its work. The SOI Foundation is a registered Canadian charity and its affiliate The Polar Education Foundation has 501(c)(3) charitable status as a public charity in the USA.

By contributing to the SOI Foundation, you contribute to:

Scholarships for students, scientists and educators to participate in the Students on Ice Arctic and Antarctic expeditions; in 2015 more than 80% of the participants in the Arctic expedition received a full scholarship due to the generous support of partners, funders and donors.

New programs that benefit the Polar Regions, such as the Foundation’s Arctic Youth and Partnerships Program, which focuses on increasing the benefits of the Foundations work for Arctic youth and their communities. A program currently under development is the SOI Alumni Program, which will significantly enhance the support for Alumni from SOI’s programs.

New projects that raise awareness of the importance of the Polar Regions, contribute to sustainable development or enhance environmental protection in the Polar Regions.

Examples of projects recently supported by the SOI Foundation are:

  • SOI at IUCN World Conservation Congress: a team of staff and expedition alumni engaged in meaningful conversation, led Polar themed workshops, and heard from world leaders with a goal of conserving the environment and working with nature to solve global challenges.
  • Q is for Qajaq: a collaborative initiative to help inspire a renaissance of kayaking and kayak building in Canada’s Arctic.

You can contribute to the Foundation in the following ways:

General-purpose donation
The SOI Foundation relies on funding and donations from a large variety of sources to conduct our work. One-time general-purpose donations allow us to fill funding gaps and represent great contributions to furthering our polar education goals and outreach initiatives. The Students on Ice Foundation is a registered Canadian charity, BN 836648766 RR0001. Canadian residents (U.S. residents see below) can make a general donation, donate in memory of a loved one, or contribute to a student’s expedition fee online through Canada Helps and receive an automatic tax receipt for any amount.

Alternatively, Canadian residents can donate by cheque or wire transfer. Donations over $100 will receive a tax receipt.

For United States residents, donations can by made by check (payable to the Polar Education Foundation) or wire transfer. The Polar Education Foundation, an affiliate of the SOI Foundation, is a registered 501 (c) (3) charity in the United States. Federal ID (EIN) 20-5853356. Tax receipts will be issued for donations over $100.

Aeroplan Donations

Air travel is critical to bringing students and staff together from far reaching communities across Canada and around the world for our annual expeditions, outreach initiatives and alumni projects related to the Polar Regions. Your Aeroplan donation helps to bring students and staff to Ottawa for expeditions and supports an active and global alumni network attending international conferences, initiating nationwide start-ups and participating in educational opportunities around the world.

Annual Giving

Including the SOI Foundation in your planned annual giving provides consistency for you and certainty for the Students on Ice Foundation. If the Foundation’s Annual Giving Program is of interest to you, please liaise with our Director of Development Henk van der Molen to set-up your donor account.

SOI Foundation Endowment Fund
Contributing to the Foundation’s Endowment Fund allows you to invest in the long term future of the SOI Foundation. Your donation will be invested and the Foundation will annually receive the returns on this investment to further its objectives and run its programs.
The purpose of the SOI Foundation’s Endowment Fund is to provide the Foundation with stable annual revenue that guarantees longevity for its programs and that allows for development and execution of activities that maximise the Foundation’s long-term impacts and outcomes. The SOI Foundation’s Endowment Fund is managed by the Community Foundation of Ottawa.
